The Sea Exploring
Project was initiated in 1997 , in Bucharest, Romania and had as
main target the production of a 10m/7 tons classic yacht, for
an american owner. The plans for this Bristol Channel Cutter, were
drawn by american naval architect Lyle. C. Hess and were rated
between top ten in his class by Classic Boat Magazine U.K, 1998 in
Aug. edition. More than 200 yachts were built upon these plans.More than
500 Internet sites are to be found around Lyle Hess plans. There is even
a owners association of this type of yacht, displayng a site on the
net.The price for a new production boat made in fiberglass by U.S
producers Sam L. Morse, Costa Mesa California( phone 714-645-1834), is
150000 $. The custom made yachts made in laminated wood are selling at
twice this price. All these prices are available on the net. The success
of Lyle Hess plans, does rely to boat seaworthiness and sailing qualities, that
are placing him as oceanic cruiser in competition with much more recent
boatdesigns. The custom construction took 15000
work hours, close to the timing of a production shipyard ,an
impressive list of options being provided to owner. Interior and technological
approach were designed by project manager/initiator along with selection&training
of local craftsmen up to fit for the job level of quality. At every
level, Lloyd's of London standards were thoroughly followed .Practically
every part of the structure (.keel, stem, frames, planking, deck, cabin,
interior furniture), was cold molded and laminated using West System
Epoxidic Resin. The clear coated hull places the boat on a very special
value level. The West System Epoxydic Resin cold molding&strip
planking results in light, strong& easy to maintain
structure. Best american materials were used; mahogany and teak for
hull, deck and interiors, bruynzeel dutch plywood, the best epoxydic resin
brand, siliconic bronze for all fastenings, best quality primers, varnishes
and paints.
